Scholarship Saturday: The Gates Millennium Scholarship

Gates Millennium Scholarship

Founded by a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates in 1999, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program strives to reduce the financial barriers that stop many minorities from pursuing higher education. The Scholars Program provides:
  • an award that covers the cost of education for unmet need and self-help aid
  • renewable awards for maintaining a satisfactory academic record
  • both undergraduate and graduate school funding, including funding for Ph.D.s
  • an average award of $12,492
  • leadership and professional development programs
This scholarship is available to students of African American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Hispanic American, and Asian Pacific Islander American descent who have a GPA of 3.3 or above. The program also has a large network of alumni: more than 17,000 individuals have received funding since the program's inception.

With this scholarship, students are not required to attend a certain school or major in anything particular. The GMS Program simply assesses a student's credential and demonstrated need so that they may pursue the education they want without having to worry about finances.

The deadline to apply for the class of 2016 is JANUARY 13, 2016.
